Earthenware pottery has been produced since Antiquity in the Middle East and Near East.  From here, production moved slowly throughout North Africa before arriving in Spain and then moving on to Italy and France where its use led to a complete renewal of decorative style.  The English invented fine earthenware which became famous throughout the world in the 18th century.
